Frequently asked questions

What's a domain name?

A domain name is the human-readable address of a website, such as yourbrand.com. It consists of a name and a top-level domain (TLD), which is the extension at the end of the address. TLDs can be country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) like .nl or .de, used to target a specific country, or generic TLDs (gTLDs) like .com, .net, or .tech, which can represent an activity, a community, or a brand.

What’s the difference between a domain name and web hosting?

A domain name is the address of your website. Web hosting is the server where your website’s files are stored. You need both: the domain directs visitors to the hosting space where your website lives.

Can I change my domain name after purchase?

No. A domain name cannot be renamed or edited once it has been registered. There is no way to change the spelling or modify the existing name. If you want a different domain, you must register a new one and, if needed, redirect your old domain to the new address.
This is the standard process used across all registrars.

How long does a domain name registration last?

Most domain names are registered for 1 year by default and must be renewed to remain yours. Scaleway also offers multi-year registrations (up to 10 years depending on the extension).
To avoid any risk of accidental expiration, we strongly recommend enabling auto-renewal or renewing in advance. If a domain is not renewed on time, it may enter a grace period, followed by a redemption period with higher recovery fees. After that, the domain is released and becomes available to anyone.

How does the Domain Name Redemption Period work?

The redemption period is a post-expiration phase during which the domain is temporarily removed from service but can still be restored by its owner. Redemption fees apply because the domain is being held exclusively for you. After this period, the domain will be deleted and released.

Can I buy multiple domain names for one project?

Yes. Many businesses register multiple domains to protect their brand, secure different TLDs or name variations, and redirect them to their main website. This helps prevent misuse, improves visibility, and keeps their online identity consistent.

I already own domain names. How do I transfer them to Scaleway?

To transfer a domain, unlock it with your current registrar and request the AUTH/EPP authorization code. Transfers usually include a 1-year renewal, depending on the TLD.
For a smooth transition with no downtime, we recommend configuring the domain as external in Scaleway and updating the name servers before starting the transfer.

How can I protect my domain name from being stolen or hijacked?

  • Use strong account security, enable multifactor authentication (MFA), and keep your Scaleway account credentials private;
  • Make sure your domain is locked to prevent unauthorized transfers;
  • Never share your authorization code (AUTH/EPP code) with anyone;
  • Monitor the contact email associated with your domain, and contact Scaleway Support if you receive any suspicious notification (for example, a transfer request);
  • Renew your domain early to ensure continuous ownership.

What is DNSSEC?

DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) is a security feature that protects your domain from certain DNS attacks, such as spoofing or cache poisoning. It adds a digital signature to your DNS records, allowing resolvers to verify that the information they receive is authentic.
